Pick the best frame for your thumbnail automatically
A good thumbnail starts with a sharp, well-lit frame. When you open a video, this video thumbnail generator samples frames across the whole clip, skips frames that are nearly black or washed out, and ranks the rest by sharpness (how much fine detail they have), so frames blurred by motion sink to the bottom. The six best are shown as suggestions, spread through the video so you get a choice of different scenes.
Click a suggestion to load it at full resolution, or drag the slider to any other moment and press Use this moment. The frame is decoded directly from the video file, so it is the real frame at full quality and not a capture of the player window.
To look at a moment frame by frame before choosing, use the frame by frame video player; to see the whole video on one page first, make a video contact sheet.
YouTube thumbnail size from a video frame
Pick an output size and the frame is cropped to fill it without stretching. The crop position slider moves the visible area left and right (or up and down), so you can keep the subject in view.
| Size | Shape | Use |
|---|---|---|
| 1280×720 | 16:9 | YouTube video thumbnails; exported JPGs are kept under 2 MB so they also upload from a phone |
| 1080×1920 | 9:16 | Shorts thumbnails and vertical covers; JPGs also kept under 2 MB |
| 1080×1080 | 1:1 | Square posts |
| 1200×630 | 1.91:1 | Link previews when a page is shared |
YouTube’s help page on custom thumbnails (checked 25 October 2026) asks for 16:9 for videos and 9:16 for Shorts, a width of at least 640 pixels, JPG or PNG, and a file under 2 MB when uploading from a phone (50 MB from a computer). It recommends 3840×2160 when you have it. A frame cannot hold more detail than the video it comes from, so 1280×720 is a sensible size for 720p and 1080p footage. The square and 1200×630 sizes are common choices, not platform rules.
The video thumbnail generator always crops; it never stretches or squashes the picture. Cropping a landscape video to a vertical cover keeps only a narrow slice of the frame, so pick a frame where the subject is near the middle, then fine-tune with the crop slider.
Add a simple title
Type a short title and it is drawn on the frame in one of two bold open-source fonts: Anton, a tall condensed face that fits long words, or Archivo Black, a wide heavy face for two or three words. Choose the size, colour (white, yellow or black) and position (top, middle or bottom). The dark outline keeps text readable on busy backgrounds. Long titles wrap onto up to three lines.
Saving the thumbnail
Download JPG saves at high quality. For the two video presets, if the file would be over 2 MB the quality is lowered in small steps until it fits, and the status line shows the final size, so the file is ready to upload from a phone or a computer. Download PNG is lossless and usually larger; use it when you want to keep editing the image. The file name includes the video name and the size, for example sample-counter_thumbnail_1280x720.jpg.
That is deliberately all: this is a quick way to turn a frame into a clean thumbnail, not a design app. For layered designs, export the frame here as PNG and finish it in your editor.

Input: our sample video (1280×720, 10 seconds).
| Size | Area of the frame kept | Scale |
|---|---|---|
| 1280×720 | the whole frame, 1280×720 | 1× |
| 1080×1920 (centre) | a 405×720 slice from x = 438 | 2.67× |
| 1080×1080 (centre) | a 720×720 square from x = 280 | 1.5× |
A vertical cover enlarges a narrow slice of a landscape frame 2.67 times (1920 ÷ 720), so start from the sharpest frame you can.
